January Meeting Recap – Ruth Bader Ginsburg: Role Model Extraordinaire
By Debra Madaris Efird
For our January meeting, Kara Widener had the fun idea of us attending the Ruth Bader Ginsburg movie, “On the Basis of Sex.” We had a large group of cheering women (and men!) at Concord Mills as RBG pushed her way forward during the early years of her career. She handled the dismissive attitude she encountered from male Harvard law students and staff with determination and wit. She assisted her husband through serious illness, and he stood behind her all the way. She thrilled us with her impressive intelligence and indomitable spirit as she raised a family while advancing recognition of gender discrimination to the courts. A highlight of the movie was the cameo appearance of the real current-day RBG on the steps of the Supreme Court building!
What can we take away from this movie, besides feeling admiration for the unflappable Ruth Bader Ginsburg? We can be proud of the many women who have won positions in Congress and in our own state legislature. We can push for more women in local government and judicial positions. We can work hard behind the scenes to ensure that 2020 is blue, blue, blue. Let’s aspire to be more like RBG and we can’t go wrong!
